Water Safety This Summer

by Mary Jo Backer, Director of Health & Safety

Summer is the perfect time for splashing, swimming, and making happy memories outdoors.

Summer is the perfect time for splashing, swimming, and making happy memories outdoors. Whether your family is headed to the beach, lake, pool, splash pad, or simply enjoying a hose and kiddie pool in the backyard, water safety should always be part of the fun.

Children can get into trouble quickly around water – even in shallow water and even when adults are nearby. Slippery pool decks, running on wet surfaces, unsafe float toys, or unsupervised access to water can all lead to preventable accidents. The good news is that simple habits and precautions can make water play much safer for everyone.

Here are a few tips:

  • Always supervise children closely during water play – even in bathtubs or small kiddie pools.
  • Stay within arm’s reach of young children near water.
  • Consider swimming lessons to help children become comfortable in the water.
  • Use properly fitted life jackets that are Coast Guard certified when boating or near open water.
  • Choose safe water toys and avoid inflatable rings or floats that can tip or trap a child.
  • Walk carefully on wet surfaces to prevent slips and falls.
  • Secure pools and other water areas with fences and locked gates.
  • Learn CPR and basic first aid so you are prepared in an emergency.

Most importantly, enjoy the season! Try water balloon games, sprinklers, sponge tosses, slip-and-slides, or backyard “car washes” for bikes and scooters. Safe water play can be simple, active, refreshing – and a wonderful way to connect as a family all summer long.
