Summer is a time for sunshine, fun and relaxation – it’s also a vital opportunity to keep young minds growing. Children thrive on routine and stimulation, which can sometimes become more relaxed during the summer, and that’s ok! Summer is the perfect time to find fun ways to nurture curiosity through play, exploration, and everyday experiences. Whether indoors, outdoors, on vacation or at the beach, opportunities to learn are everywhere.
Fun ways to learn through play this summer:
Outside learning fun
- Nature scavenger hunt- make a list of things to find- like a pinecone, a bird, or something yellow. Children build observation and categorization skills while exploring.
- Sidewalk Chalk Games- practice writing letters, numbers, or shapes by drawing them outside and turning them into hopscotch or matching games.
Inside Learning fun
- Story time and puppet shows- read books together and act them out with toys or puppets. This supports literacy, imagination and language development.
- Kitchen helpers- let children help with simple recipes. Measuring, pouring, and mixing teach early math and science and they love being included.
On the go learning (travel or beach days)
- I-Spy & Alphabet games- in the car, on the plane, or even at the beach, play games like “I-Spy some that starts with B..” to build vocabulary and attention to detail.
- Beach Math- Count seashells, draw shapes in the sand, or sort rocks by size and color- math is more fun with sandy toes!
The key to summer learning is keeping it playful and low-pressure. Children are naturally curious, and with a little intention, everyday moments can become rich learning experiences. Whether you’re at home, in the backyard, or away on vacation, every day holds the potential for fun and learning.
