Nourishing Minds And Growing Bodies

by Daniel England, Culinary Director

We know that what children eat each day plays an important role in how they feel, learn, and grow.

We know that what children eat each day plays an important role in how they feel, learn, and grow. At Children’s Paradise, our chefs take pride in following the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines which promote balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and—importantly—whole grains every day.

Whole grains are especially important because they provide steady energy that lasts. When children eat foods that digest slowly—like oatmeal, brown rice, or whole-grain bread—their bodies release energy gradually. This helps them stay focused and even-tempered throughout the day. In contrast, foods with large amounts of added sugar can cause quick spikes in energy followed by sudden drops. These ups and downs may leave children feeling tired, unfocused, or extra sensitive.

Processed foods typically contain unknown ingredients and no fiber. While these high fat/high sugar foods are cheap and abundant, they are a short-term, empty calorie fix with little to no nutritional benefits.

Curiosity can be “fed” too. The team of chefs at Children’s Paradise are passionate about fueling your little ones with meals that do more than satisfy nutrition and hunger. During meals, children explore new tastes, textures, and colors while learning how different foods grow and help their bodies and minds. Through Harvest of the Month, Jr. Chef activities, and hands-on food experiences, children build confidence as they try different ingredients and discover how fun it is to make healthy choices.

Spring is almost here and that means lots of fresh, in-season vegetables and fruits which deliver peak flavor and mood-boosting nutrients to support growing bodies. San Diego’s mild climate offers a huge variety of produce—strawberries, oranges, spinach, avocados, carrots, broccoli, and more.

At home, you can support healthy eating habits by offering simple, whole-food snacks and exploring new ways to eat fruits and vegetables. Every smart food choice—at school and at home—builds steady energy, strong immune systems, bright moods, and a healthy foundation for the future.
