Smart and Safe: Car Safety Tips for Parents with Young Children

by Mo Hussein, Director of Transportation

Driving with little ones on board means staying extra alert and building safe habits every time you hit the road.

Avoid distractions. Set your GPS and music before you go and keep your phone out of reach. Texting or adjusting your navigation—even for a second—can lead to serious consequences. Secure loose items, lock the doors, and use child safety locks. Set up snacks and toys ahead of time, and if something needs your attention, pull over safely.

Got a fussy baby or a toddler meltdown? It’s tough but try not to turn around or attempt to sooth them while driving. Soothing music, soft toys, or a baby-safe mirror where your child can see you can help your child feel more secure. If you need to step in, find a safe spot to stop first.

Never leave your child unattended in the car. Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can become dangerous within minutes, putting your child at a significant risk of heat stroke. And always check the back seat before locking up to make sure that no child is left behind.

Lead by example. Your child is watching! Stay calm, buckle up, and drive with care. The safe habits you show now will help shape their future behind the wheel.

Safe driving isn’t just about the destination—it’s about protecting what matters most.
