ALPHABET SOUP: Decoding PreK, UPK and TK

by Lisa Hicks, Chief Sales Officer

So many letters—PreK, UPK, TK! What do they all mean? Let’s break it down:

  • PreK (Preschool) – That’s what we do! Research shows preschool gives children lifelong advantages. You’ve already made a great choice.
  • UPK (Universal Pre-Kindergarten) – Children’s Paradise proudly participates! California’s plan to give every child access to early learning.
  • TK (Transitional Kindergarten) – Public school-based early learning for 3 and 4-year-olds (basically preschool at the school district). Created to add preschool spaces but comes with challenges—elementary schools need to adapt environments and train teachers in early childhood best practices.
  • Kindergarten Readiness – We also do this! Choosing the right school before kindergarten is an important decision for parents. Children’s Paradise prepares children for a smooth transition with its Kindergarten Readiness program, ensuring they enter school healthy, happy, and ready to learn.

Why Stay at Children’s Paradise?

Choosing to continue with Children’s Paradise means:

Established relationships – Your child stays in a familiar, nurturing environment with trusted teachers and center staff.

Extended hours and days – Flexible schedules to fit your family’s needs, unlike TK’s limited school-day hours and calendar.

Comprehensive care – Meals, enrichment activities, and individualized attention.

Proven kindergarten readiness – We’ve been successfully preparing children for years!
