A Simple Morning Routine With Young Children

by Shaina Cormier, Mentor Director

Mornings with little ones can feel like a whirlwind, but having a simple, consistent routine can make a big difference. As a parent of three young children, I’ve learned that structure (with a little flexibility) helps keep things running more smoothly for everyone.

Start by waking up a bit before the kids, if possible. Even 15–20 minutes of quiet time to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and gather your thoughts can make a big difference. Once the kids are up, ease them into the morning with cuddles and a cheerful tone—it helps set a positive mood for the rest of the day.

We’re lucky that our children get breakfast at Children’s Paradise, but if your kids are like mine, they’re usually hungry right away. A quick, filling option—like toast, fruit, or yogurt—can hold them over until school.

After breakfast, it’s time to get dressed. Picking out clothes the night before can save a lot of time and decision-making in the morning. Then it’s on to brushing hair and teeth. A little music or turning it into a fun challenge can keep things light and help move everyone along.

Once everyone’s ready, start the process of getting out the door. Keep shoes, jackets, and bags in one spot and packed the night before so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Loading up the car can be a team effort—older siblings enjoy helping out and it gives them a sense of responsibility.

Not every morning will go perfectly, and that’s okay. But over time, a familiar routine helps kids know what to expect—and turns those hectic mornings into something a little more peaceful and predictable.
